Journey Through Papercuts is the first solo exhibition by Bristol-based artist Raluca Bobis. The exhibition features a collection of surreal cut-paper works she has created over the past two years, exploring themes of nature, intricate, whimsical, and eerie worlds, as well as the immaterial terrains of childhood memories and dreams—centring on themes of shelter and belonging.
Often, her works contain a world within a world where bats, magical beings, and moth fairies coexist in imaginary landscapes of forests and untamed gardens.
Raluca draws inspiration from a wide range of subjects, including the natural world, folklore, and imaginary realms. She found her niche as a papercut artist more than a decade after completing her studies in fine art. With experience in illustration, ceramics, and light installations, she has consistently sought to create a fusion between the internal emotional space and the external physical landscape in all the techniques she has worked with and explored.
What drew her to this technique was the delicacy it brings to her work—the connectivity of the image, the shadows cast through the lines, and the way they shift as daylight changes, creating miniature worlds of myth and fantasy. She is fascinated by the endless possibilities that the medium of papercutting offers.
Most of the works presented in this exhibition are cut from a single piece of black or white paper, while others resemble a collage of multiple cut-out layers.
Through the boundless potential of papercutting, Raluca invites viewers to embark on a journey through her enchanting, imaginative creations.
