Duplications, reproductions, imitations? Human or machine, fact of fiction?
What can we learn about ourselves from engagements with artefacts that challenge understandings of what counts as knowledge and whose knowledge is important.
In this exhibition, the artefacts on display are outputs of collaboration between machines and humans. Whether the final output can be classified as human-authored (and thus intellectual property of the person) or machine-authored remains to be seen.
As a concept, nonsense has been described as “meaning that has been messed with” (Cook, 2025, in print) and a tool with which to influence, coerce and manipulate people. Could what is on display fall within what could be classed as ‘nonsense’? When applied, nonsense can also be construed as a form of deception – something which can be a form of relational power. Given that machines of the future will be autonomous and make their own decision, what does this mean for humans who consume content that machines generate and which could be understood as either knowledge or nonsense?
