In Anglo-Norman society there existed a myth that reveals a great deal about who we Brits used to think ourselves to be. The tale is that of Albina – eldest of 30 Syrian sisters and our ancient matriarch.

When forced to flee from their tyrannical father, the sisters set sail in a small wooden boat, crossing the sea in search of a new home.

The sisters eventually make land in Britain, which at this time is an uninhabited and unknown land. It is from Albina’s name that the ancient name for Britain – ‘Albion’ is derived.

Today, any memory of this once important folk story is long gone, and many have a very different opinion of refugees in small boats arriving to our shores. Despite once believing that such people were our most ancient ancestors, we now vilify and demonise those who would travel here in search of a fresh start.

This show asks participating artists to explore themes present in this myth, through the lens of contemporary British society.
